SYNOPSIS: Opposites in every way . . . except the one that matters

Shaw Landon loved Rule Archer from the moment she laid eyes on him. Rule is everything a straight–A pre-med student like Shaw shouldn’t want–and the only person she’s never tried to please. She isn’t afraid of his scary piercings and tattoos or his wild attitude. Though she knows that Rule is wrong for her, her heart just won’t listen.

To a rebel like Rule Archer, Shaw Landon is a stuck-up, perfect princess-and his dead twin brother’s girl. She lives by other people’s rules; he makes his own. He doesn’t have time for a good girl like Shaw-even if she’s the only one who can see the person he truly is.

But a short skirt, too many birthday cocktails, and spilled secrets lead to a night neither can forget. Now, Shaw and Rule have to figure out how a girl like her and a guy like him are supposed to be together without destroying their love . . . or each other.

WHAT DID I THINK: 5 out of 5 Stars; Okay, let me start by saying that I really liked this book. What am I saying!!?? I loved this book!!! I am not positive if Rule was Jay Crownover first book, but I could not find anything else by her.  All I can say is that she has a new fan and that is me.

I was getting a little frustrated and losing hope that I would not find another good, hot bad-boy with tattoos meets sweet cute girl love story. Well this book brought me out of that drought because I loved it. Every word!!!

These are of course my favorite type of YA/NA stories.   Bad boy meets good girl.  Bad boy has issues as does the good girl, but they start a relationship with a lot of baggage and other drama.  Rule, the bad boy, is a male slut. He is angsty and moody.  Shaw Landon is a beautiful, smart, good girl who happens to love Rule even though Rule has no idea.    Rule and Shaw have known each other since they were 14 years old.    Rule is estranged from his parents after his brother died in an accident.

Every Sunday morning, Shaw picks up Rule and drives him to his parents’ house for brunch only to find Rule with a different girl naked with him in bed. Shaw has not become immune to seeing Rule with those girls.  Shaw just keeps her feelings for Rule a secret, because she knows that he does not share the same feelings that she has for him.

This book had me yelling and frustrated with Rule and yet I could not stop reading.  The story has you sucked in at page one.  It does not drag. Even with the grammar and editing issues, I really enjoyed this book.  The romance was steamy, their relationship was hot and I loved all the characters.

  • Did I feel connected to the characters? Yes. I loved each and every character!!
  • Do I recommend? Yes. You will love this book!!!
  • Pace of the story: Perfect
  • Will I read the sequel? Yes. I cannot wait to read Jet’s story.
  • Positives: I liked that the author had one of the obvious angsty issues happen early on in the story.  I hate when the author leaves the obvious conflict for the last 20%.  In Rule, the main characters deal with the obvious conflict in the first half and then the characters deal with another conflict that I did not see coming, which made the story all the more interesting.
  • Negatives: Loved it all!
  • Bottom line: I love this stories, but what makes it better is when they are written well with great characters.

Synopsis: With his tight leather pants and a sharp edge that makes him dangerous, Jet Keller is every girl’s rock and roll fantasy. But Ayden Cross is done walking on the wild side with bad boys. She doesn’t want to give in to the heat she sees in Jet’s dark, haunted eyes. She’s afraid of getting burned from the sparks of their spontaneous combustion, even as his touch sets her on fire.

Jet can’t resist the Southern Belle with mile-long legs in cowboy boots who defies his every expectation. Yet the closer he feels to Ayden, the less he seems to know her. While he’s tempted to get under her skin and undo her in every way, he knows firsthand what happens to two people with very different ideas about relationships.

Will the blaze burn into an enduring love. . . or will it consume their dreams and turn them to ashes?

WHAT DID I THINK: 4 out of 5 stars. I was highly anticipating this book after reading RULE and was so excited to hear that the sequel was going to be about Jet.

We met Jet and Ayden in RULE.  We felt their attraction for each other so it was nice to see that they would have their own story.

Ayden had been living a “lie” pretending to be a “good” girl when actually she had secrets that she was not sharing with anyone, not even with her closet friend, Shaw. It killed me that Ayden felt that she could not share the painful memory of who she was before with anyone.

“I was going to going to have to keep Jet Keller locked in the box where I kept pre-Colorado Ayden.  Only now, I was going to make sure that the lid was on so tight, there wouldn’t ever be a chance of it coming off. The risk wasn’t worth it.”

I love stories where we see an attraction between two people, but they won’t give into it.  Either too afraid that it won’t work or that it will ruin the friendship.  So I like how the story started where Ayden asks Jet that she would like to be with him for one night, but he says “no.”   Ayden feels rejected, but will not show that the rejection affected her in any way.  One year later from that night, Jet has moved in with Ayden and Cora and you see how Ayden handles seeing a girl walk out of Jet’s room every morning.  And from there the story begins…

  • Did I feel connected to the characters? Yes, I liked Jet’s character and I liked Ayden’s character and I liked them together.   I loved that the author brought back Shaw and Rule so we got to see how their relationship was going.
  • Pace of the story: Okay
  • Positives: The characters. I love Jay Crownover’s characters.  These are some of my favorite stories and I think Jay writes them very well.   I will continue to read everything by Jay Crownover.  Her characters have heart and soul and I love how dedicated they are to each other.  Friendship and love. There are some sweet moments between Jet and Ayden.
  • Negatives: Some of Ayden’s inner dialogue became repetitive.
  • Do I recommend?  Yes, I liked this one.

“Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young’s ‘Love the One You’re With’”

  • Bottom line: I am excited about the next book in the series being about Rome.  I just don’t know how I feel about Rome and Cora.  However, that may change once I read it. Like I said, I will read everything by Jay Crownover.  I love when girls are strong, independent and speak their mind. However, I do not like when all that strength comes across as b****y.

“Cora was mouthy and loud on a good day; give her ammunition or show her a weakness, and she was like a piranha that smelled blood in the water.”

If there is a 4th book in the series, I would love it to be about Asa.  I want to know what he is thinking and if he will ever find the right person that will challenge him.  He needs someone strong and clever to handle him and not take any of his crap.   Also, I think it should be someone who has a big heart and shows love for others even though their life is not easy.    Asa needs someone like this so he could see that there are people who are good in the world (even though they have little) and do not need to manipulate to get something.

Book Format Read: A copy was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author

Jay Crownover is the best-selling author of Rule. Like the characters in her Marked Men series, she is a big fan of tattoos. She loves music and wishes she could be a rock star, but since she has no aptitude for singing or instrument playing, she’ll settle for writing stories with interesting characters and that make the reader feel something. She lives in Colorado with her three dogs.
